As with many makeup artists I am endlessly fascinated, informed, and inspired by the art of Drag makeup. Even though you might not know it to look at my work, I actually incorporate technique straight from Drag into my makeups. Good makeup is comprised of the same building blocks be it Drag, beauty, fashion, etc. Bottom line: you’ve got to know and understand facial structure in order to architect a makeup design. In Drag – as with any form of Stage makeup – underneath the glitter, feathers and exxxxtravaganza of it all is some serious makeup technique.
Leland Bobbe’s photo essay “Half Drag – A Different Kind of Beauty” allows us to see a transformation in progress. By viewing a face that is half made-up and half undone is you can really when to stay in the lines, when to go outside of the lines, and when to create new lines that weren’t even there in order to achieve the desired effect. Trust and believe less extreme versions of these transformative techniques are exactly what you are looking at when you look at a fashion editorial or a celebrity red carpet makeup.
